Minnesota Golden Gophers Beanie
On the evening of Dec 27, 2015, I crocheted a beanie that followed the pattern that I used to make my Cleveland Browns beanie, except for the colors, of course.
Yarn details:
- Red Heart - Super Saver
- Worsted - no. 4
- 100% acrylic
- 364 yards.
I used grey, white, golden yellow, and maroon/burgundy/red wine. It turned out well, color-wise. Very close to the school's colors.
The only technical difference in this pattern was the grey part along the bottom of the hat. Instead of two rows of single crochet stitches like I used for the Browns hat, I used a double crochet.
Pattern
I started with the following hook: US H8 / 5.00 mm
Start with the red wine yarn.
To start hat: Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch in the first chain, a ring is formed.
Rnd 1: Chain 2, do 13 DC in the ring, join with a slip stitch in the first DC (13 stitches)
Rnd 2: Chain 2, 2 DC in each stitch, join with a slip stitch in the first DC (26 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, *2dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat from * around ending with 2dc in last st, join with a sl st in first dc. 39 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *dc in first two sts, 2dc in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first dc. 52 sts.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *dc in first three sts, 2dc in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
That produced a disk of 7.00 to 7.25 inches in diamater. Good for me. Although with this stiff yarn, I think 6.50 to 6.75 inches in diameter would be fine.
Changed to golden yellow yarn.
Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
Changed to red wine.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.
Changed to white.
Rnd 8: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
Changed to red wine.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.
Changed to golden yellow.
Rnd 10: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
Changed to red wine.
Rnd 11: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
Switched to a smaller hook for the rest of the way: US G6 / 4.00 mm.
Stayed with red wine for this row too.
Rnd 12: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.
Switched to medium grey.
Rnd 13: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.
Fasten off. Weave in a lot of yarn ends.
