Cleveland Browns Beanie

On Sat, Oct 3, 2015, I crocheted a beanie that used colors that might be similar to the color scheme used by the Cleveland Browns. It could all be a total coincidence, since it's possible that the NFL has a secret military force that's used to track down copyright violators.

Yarn

On Oct 3, 2015, I bought inexpensive yarn at JoAnn's in colors of dark brown (coffee), orange, white, and medium grey.

The Browns do not use grey in their uniforms. The Browns released new uniforms and colors in the spring of 2015, and fans thought that the Browns would incorporate some medium grey. I like the touch of medium grey along the bottom border of the beanie.

I'll use this yarn for practicing crochet stitches and to create multiple types of beanies with these colors. And I'll make a scarf that's decorative only for game day.

The new "orange" color for the Browns is actually a reddish-orange. The orange yarn that I bought is not that red. Close enough. No other pro team uses orange, brown, and white.

Yarn details:

  • Red Heart - Super Saver
  • Worsted - no. 4
  • 100% acrylic
  • 364 yards.

I think that a skein costs about $3.50.

Pattern

For the Oct 3, 2015 beanie, I based my crocheting on the following pattern:

http://crochetpatterns09.blogspot.com/2009/08/adult-hdc-hat.html

I did not follow the pattern identically. Plus, I added colors.

The author starts the blog post by saying that she used Half Double Crochet stitches, but the pattern uses Double Crochet.

I used DC with a mix of SC at times.

Also, the pattern at the above blog post said to "turn" at the end of each round. I did not do this. I did not realize that this was done for beanies when using the chain and slip-stitch method. I'll look into turning at another time.

My version:

I started with the following hook: US H8 / 5.00 mm

Start with the dark brown yarn.

To start hat: Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch in the first chain, a ring is formed.

Rnd 1: Chain 2, do 13 DC in the ring, join with a slip stitch in the first DC (13 stitches)

Rnd 2: Chain 2, 2 DC in each stitch, join with a slip stitch in the first DC (26 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, *2dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat from * around ending with 2dc in last st, join with a sl st in first dc. 39 sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *dc in first two sts, 2dc in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first dc. 52 sts.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, *dc in first three sts, 2dc in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

That produced a disk of 7.00 to 7.25 inches in diamater. Good for me. Although with this stiff yarn, I think 6.50 to 6.75 inches in diameter would be fine.

Change to orange yarn.

Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

Change to dark brown.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.

Change to white.

Rnd 8: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

Change to dark brown.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.

Change to orange.

Rnd 10: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

Change to brown.

Rnd 11: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

Switched to a smaller hook for the rest of the way: US G6 / 4.00 mm.

Stayed with dark brown for this row too.

Rnd 12: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 65 sts.

Switched to medium grey.

Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. 65 sts.

Fasten off. Weave in a lot of yarn ends.

My finished hat and scarf.
