Double Crochet Beanie

I completed this #beanie on Sep 16, 2015 after starting it the night before. I based it upon this pattern.

http://www.straw.com/crystalpalaceyarns/patterns/regpatts4/yarnsH-M/moplus-EveryDayHat.html

I used one skein of yarn, except for about 20 inches.

Yarn info:

  • Loops & Threads
  • Cozy Wool
  • 90 yards
  • net wt 4.5 oz
  • 50% wool and 50% acrylic
  • Color: 02014 - chocolate
  • no. 6 - super bulky
  • hand wash and lay flat to dry

It's a stiff-ish yarn. The final product looks like a bowl or a pasta pot.

It's a little big. I made the diameter 8.5 to 9.0 inches. I need to limit diameter to 7.0 to 8.0 inches for me.

But this hat would be a good to fit over a thin, snug hat. When the air temp is below zero, and it's windy, sometimes doubling up on the beanies is required.

The part of the pattern that I used:

INSTRUCTIONS
You will work in a continuous spiral rather than joining each round with a sl st.
Ch 4.
Rnd 1: Work 10 dc in 1st ch. [11 dc]
Rnd 2: Work 2 dc in each dc around. [22 dc]
Rnd 3: (Dc in next dc, work 2 dc in next dc) around. [33 dc]
Rnd 4: (Dc in each of next 2 dc's, work 2 dc in next dc) around. [44 dc]
Rnd 5: (Dc in each of next 3 dc's, work 2 dc in next dc) around. [55 dc]

I used a K hook for most of the crocheting.

Near the end, I switched to a J hook and made two more rounds of double crochet.

Then I made two or three half double crochet stitches before switching to single crochet.

I made two rounds of single crochet with the J hook. Then I finished with a handful of slip stitches.

The pattern states:

Edge Option 1 (using G hook): Continue to work dc in each dc around for 3". Change to G hook (or see Option 2 below) and work dc in each dc until you have ~20" left in the ball of yarn. Work hdc in each of next 2 dc's, work 3 sc's in each of next 3 dc, work 3 sl sts in each of next dc. Fasten off.

Edge Option 2 (using st dec): Continue to work dc in each dc around for 3".
Next Rnd: (Dc in each of next 10 dc's, sk 1 dc) around. [60 dc]
Work dc in each dc until you have ~20" of yarn left.

Finish:
This is to taper off for a smooth edge and is worked over the first 8 sts only.

Work hdc in each of next 2 dc's, work 3 sc's in each of next 3 dc, work 3 sl sts in each of next dc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Beanie measurements while it lays flat:

  • 8.0 inches tall
  • 11.5 inches wide near the bottom

My finished hat. It's a little large for me. It would work as a beanie worn over top of a tight-fitting beanie for bitter cold, well-below zero days.
