INSTRUCTIONS

Ch 6. Join to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc's in ring.
Rnd 2: Work 2 hdc's in each sc around. [16 hdc]

Note: From Rnd 3 to end of piece, instead of working into the top of the previous row as is typical, work each hdc in back band behind st. This will push the V's in the front of the work to form the coil design.

Rnd 3: Working each hdc in back band behind st of previous row, *Hdc in next hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [24 hdc's]
Rnd 4: *Hdc in each of next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [32 hdc's]
Rnd 5: *Hdc in each of next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [40 hdc's]
Rnd 6: *Hdc in each of next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [48 hdc's]
Rnd 7: *Hdc in each of next 5 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [56 hdc's]
Rnd 8: *Hdc in each of next 6 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [64 hdc's]
Rnd 9: *Hdc in each of next 7 hdc, work 2 hdc's in next hdc; rep from * around. [72 hdc's]

Work even in hdc until piece measures 2" less than desired length. Change to smaller hook and continue in hdc to desired length, working last rnd in sc rather than hdc. Work 2 sl sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.

I did not crochet by working from behind the stitch or whatever the pattern was saying.

I added one extra increase round for a total of 80 HDC stitches for the row.

The hat is intended for DJ who us undergoing cancer treatment. Allegedly, his coconut is larger than mine or most people.

For me, seven rounds would have been plenty. Maybe six.

I used a super wash wool that seems a little smaller than no. 4 worsted weight.

I used H hook for bulk of crocheting. Then I made one HDC row with G hook, one HDC row with F , and then two SC rows with F hook. I finished with two slip stitches.

The yarn color is dark grey.

8 inches tall and 11.5 inches wide near bottom. That's approx 23 to 24 inches in circumference.
