Thanksgiving Week 2015 Projects

I crocheted two scarves and a beanie, and I started two other beanies. I needed a dark grey scarf and beanie to wear, during my Stepdaughter's wedding weekend on Fri, Sat, and Sun, Nov 27-29.

I used inexpensive, bulky or chunky yarns, except for the first beanie that I started, which used thin, wool yarn that I bought in Toronto, earlier in the month.

Completed Beanie

I used leftover Wool-Ease yarn that I used to create the large, Bruce Springsteen beanie.

For this beanie, I made it by crocheting a rectangle, seaming the ends, and drawing in one end of the tube.

I crocheted about 9 inches tall and around 20-21 inches long, which became the circumference.

The yarn is stretchy. Crocheting 8 inches tall and about 19 inches long would be enough.

I crocheted the beanie, using a back-loop, half-double crochet stitch. I like the slight ribbing, created by crocheting in the back loop.

I wore the beanie a lot during the weekend and now afterward. It was cold and rainy on the Friday night for the rehearsal and dinner.

About the yarn:

  • Lion Brand Yarn
  • Wool-Ease
  • Chunky
  • "A bulky weight yarn with the warmth of wool, easy care of acrylic. Ideal for quick projects."
  • 80% acrylic and 20% wool
  • 5 ozs - 140 gms - 153 yds - 140 m
  • color number = 152 - Charcoal

I think that I used the following hook: K 10.5 - 6.5 mm / 10 SC / 11 R

Completed Scarves

First One

Scarf details:

  • approx 66 inches long, at least.
  • 5.5 inches wide.
  • half double crochet stitch, length-wise

Yarn:

  • inexpensive
  • Lion Brand
  • 100% acrylic
  • Super Bulky - number 6
  • 5 oz - 142 g - 81 yd - 74 m
  • color: Chicago Charcoal - a medium-dark grey
    • art no. = 135
    • color no. = 150

I probably used a K-hook, but I don't remember. Maybe L.

I needed the third skein.

I completed this in one day.

Big, bulky, heavy, dark grey scarf:

Second One

I crocheted a smaller one, and this was the one that I wore during the weekend, since temps were in the 30s and 40s.

Scarf Details:

  • around 60 inches long
  • 4.75 inches wide
  • back-loop only, half-double crochet stitch, lengthwise

The yarn is stretchy. Or it's the stitch. I should have made it around 5.5 inches wide by adding two or three more rows. After usage, the scarf is longer and narrower, but it's still a nice, workable size.

Yarn:

  • Plymouth Yarn
  • Encore Chunky
  • color number = 389
  • dyelot = 51019
  • 75% acrylic and 25% wool
  • 100 g - 143 yds

I prob used a J-hook.

The color is a medium to a medium-dark grey. I like this type of grey color. It's not charcoal or near-black, and it's not a light grey. It's a "Battleship Grey."

Uncompleted Beanies

Unfinished Beanie Number One

The small yarn made this a slow-going project. I may not have enough yarn to reach a circumference of around 21 inches.

Beanie details:

  • using the rectangle and seam sides together technique.
  • around 9 to 10 inches tall.
  • single crochet back loop only.
  • using F-hook.

With the approx 10-inch height and thin yarn, I should be able to roll up bottom an inch or two if needed. Or I could wear it a little slouchy.

During our trip to Toronto at the beginning of November 2015, I shopped at this Americo store that was located in the Fashion District. I bought a skein of black cotton yarn too.

The yarns were beautiful. The store's inside looked trendy and fashionable. It looked like it should be located in the Yorkville area where we stayed. It was not like some yarn stores that are a bit chaotic, which are fun stores too.

They placed my purchases into a small paper sack with the twine-like handles. The sack was colored a dark brown, and it contained the business's name and logo. It was not a hand-stamped bag. It was professionally done.

Some yarn in the store hung in big loops. A lot of wood in the store with art gallery-like lighting.

It was definitely the most sophisticated yarn store that I have visited.

Anyway, I halted this project because it became apparent that I would not finish it in time to wear it on the wedding weekend.

Unfinished Beanie Number Two

I used the above Plymouth Yarn, leftover, but not enough.

I'm crocheting this beaning using the spiral technique.

I'm using single crochet. I crocheted until around 6.5 inches in diameter. I'm making this one tighter.

H-hook, I think.

I crocheted several rows after reaching the desired diameter.

I need more yarn to crochet a few more inches to complete the beanie.

Unsure which pattern I'm using. Maybe one of these:

Each starts with 6 SC in the ring/last chain from the hook.

Finished this on Sat, Jan 16, 2016. In the early afternoon, we visited the Yarn Envy store, located in Ottawa Lake, MI, and I bought the yarn to finish this hat.

I'm pretty certain that I crocheted most of the hat with an H-hook. I finished the hat with G-hook for a few rows and then an F-hook for the final three rows. It's a snug hat.

8-inches tall.

It appears to be 28 total rows.
