Crochet a Beanie - Spiral Version
My August 2016 notes
- single crochet:
- ch 2
- 4 sc into 1st ch (2nd ch from hook) to form circle
- half-double crochet:
- ch 3
- 8 hdc into 1st ch to form circle
- another option is ch 3 and 6 hdc into 1st ch (3rd from hook)
- double crochet:
- ch 4
- slip-stitch into first ch to form ring
- 10 dc into ring
- another option is ch 4, slip stitch to form ring, and 8 dc into ring
The rest of the patterns are the same.
- next round: Two of each whatever into the same stitch
- next round: One whatever in first stitch, then two whatever in the second stitch. Repeat around.
- next round: One whatever in the first stitch. One whatever in the second stitch. Two whatever in the third stitch. Repeat around.
- when desired diameter is reached, then crochet one stitch in each stitch around.
- when an inch or so from the desired height, drop down one hook size to make a tighter stitch. optionally, when about a half-inch from desired height, drop down another hook size.
- when near the end of the final round, crochet a few stitches of the smaller stitch. example, if using double crochet, then crochet three stitches of half-double crochet, followed by three stitches of single crochet, followed by a few slip-stitches to finish.
- optional edging: ch 3, sc into next stitch, ch 3, sc into next stitch, etc.
Circumference is measured around the head at the tops of the ears.
- Diameter = Circumference / 3.14
Height is is measured from the crown to the bottom of the ear, although I have also measured from the crown to the eyebrows. Compare that measurement with a formula:
- Height = (Circumference / 10) * 4
Hats are generally made approximately one inch smaller in circumference than the actual circumference of the head. Sometimes, I make the hats smaller than that.
Infant info
- Newborn:
- head circumference = 13 inches
- hat circumference should be 12 to 12.5 inches
- diameter = 3.5 to 4.0 inches
- height = 4.5 to 5.5 inches
- 2 weeks to 3 months old:
- head circumference = 14 inches
- hat circumference = 13 to 13.5 inches
- crown diameter = 4.45 to 4.75 inches
- height = 5.5 to 6.0 inches
- 3 months to 6 months old:
- head circumference = 15 inches
- hat circumference = 14 to 14.5 inches
- diameter = 5.0 inches
- height = 6.0 to 6.25 inches
Simple guidelines:
- diameter = 4.0 inches and height = 5.0 inches
- diameter = 4.5 inches and height = 5.5 inches
- diameter = 5.0 inches and height = 6.0 inches
Previous Info
Adult man:
- circumference 22.5 to 24.0 inches
- hat height 11.0 to 11.5 inches
Adult woman:
- circumference 21.5 to 22.5 inches
- hat height 11.0 inches
For me:
- circle math
- my head circumference is 23.5 inches.
- I should crochet with increasing rounds until 7.0 to 7.5 inches in diameter. 6.5 inches in diameter with a single crochet stitch makes for a super snug fit on me.
- keep hat height between 7.5 to 8.0 inches tall.
- finish last couple rows with a smaller hook and/or SC rows.
